Deliberately randomizing your choice so an opponent cannot predict it. When any fixed, predictable play can be exploited, the best strategy is a calculated mix over options, with the proportions chosen so the opponent cannot gain by anticipating you. Unpredictability itself becomes the optimal policy.
Why it Matters
In adversarial situations a pattern is a weakness: anything an opponent can foresee, they can counter. Mixing removes the pattern, and game theory shows the exact proportions that leave the opponent indifferent and unable to exploit you. It is the formal reason why, against an intelligent adversary, being systematic and being predictable are not the same thing.

Randomizing where consistency actually matters; pseudo-randomness that still leaks a pattern; mixing for its own sake when a dominant strategy exists.

Unpredictability defends against exploitation but sacrifices the gains of a reliable, optimized routine; it pays only when an adversary is watching and able to respond.

Varying the placement of a penalty kick so the goalkeeper cannot commit early; randomizing inspections or defenses so an adversary cannot time around them.
